About this talk

We continue our series of virtual tours in Lithuania. In the first talk, we explored Jewish Vilnius; now we turn to the country's second-largest city, Kaunas.

Known to Jews as Kovno, Kaunas was nearly 60 percent Jewish at the end of the nineteenth century and emerged as a major center of Jewish learning, culture, and political life. Using video materials, this talk will guide viewers through the city's principal Jewish heritage sites, illuminating both everyday communal life and moments of catastrophe and moral courage. We will explore the historic city center and former Jewish Quarter, visit the 9th Fort—a site of mass murder during the Holocaust—and stop at Sugihara House, where thousands of Jews were saved through individual moral choice.

The talk will also introduce key cultural figures connected to Kaunas, including Abraham Mapu, a pioneer of modern Hebrew literature, and Danielius Dolskis, a popular Jewish singer of interwar Lithuania. Participants will see the Choral Ohel Yaakov Synagogue, which is still active to this day, alongside former prayer houses no longer in use, and discover a curious historic house in the Jewish quarter known for its mirrored exterior, offering a striking reflection on memory and place.
