About this talk

We continue our series of Virtual Tours in Lithuania. In my first talk we presented Jewish Vilnius. Now, get ready for the country's second-largest city, Kaunas, and the towns of Kedainiai and Kalvarija.

Kaunas (Kovno) was 60% Jewish at the end of the nineteenth century. Using video materials I will guide you through its main Jewish heritage sights. We will visit the city center, the Jewish Quarter, the 9th fort, Sugihara House, and much more.

After that, we will jump 50 kilometres north to Kedainiai, (Keidan) one of the oldest cities in Lithuania, which was home to a very interesting Jewish community. The outstanding religious leader Rav Eliyahu - the Vilna Gaon - lived here for a short time. In our Virtual walk, we will see the inside and the outside of Kedainiai's center. We will also pay the last tribute to the Holocaust victims at the memorial site.

Finally, the shtetl of Kalvarija (Kalvarye), the smallest of these three towns. With its Jewish cemetery, synagogues and old Talmud School building is definitely a must-see in this journey
