The talk will last approximately 90 minutes
About this talk
The making of Los Angeles is intimately tied to the Jewish community. Since the days of the first formal census of the city in 1850, Jews helped to build the city and the county of Los Angeles, they helped to found many of its largest institutions, from the University of Southern California to Cedars-Sinai Hospital, and from the City of Montebello to the powerful studios of Hollywood.
From the city's famous cable cars to the development of Santa Monica and Boyle Heights, among other notable cities and neighborhoods, the story of Jewish Los Angeles is complex, it is the story of Jewish diaspora, of overcoming adversity, and above all, building the second largest Jewish community in the United States and the fourth largest in the world.
A Historic tour of Jewish Los Angeles explores the growth of Jewish life, its successes and challenges, and lasting contributions on Southern California and beyond.
