The talk will last approximately 90 minutes
About this talk
Jewish life in Portugal has a history of more than two thousand years, shaped by periods of prosperity, persecution, forced conversion, exile and survival. This talk will trace that history through some of the places where it can still be seen today.
We will explore the medieval Jewish quarters of Lisbon, the importance of cities such as Porto, Tomar, Trancoso and Castelo de Vide, and the unique story of Belmonte, where crypto-Jewish traditions survived for centuries after the forced conversions of 1497. The talk will also address the Portuguese Inquisition, the return of organized Jewish communities in the modern period, and the renewed interest in Jewish heritage across the country.
Drawing on his work in Jewish heritage and cultural projects in Portugal, Luciano will also discuss the challenges of identifying, preserving and presenting this history today, and how Jewish heritage is becoming part of contemporary Portuguese cultural life.
