About this talk

Join us for a virtual walking tour of Riga, once dubbed the "Paris of the North," led by our Jewish Baltics expert, Daniel Gurevich. Latvia's capital is an architectural gem, showcasing Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles, and its Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

The Jewish presence in Riga dates back to the 13th century, though it would take another two centuries before Jews began to make a significant economic impact. Interestingly, in the late 1920s, Riga became the center of the global Lubavitch movement under the leadership of Rabbi Yosef Yitzhak Schneersohn, who received Latvian citizenship and protection after being exiled from the Soviet Union.

Since emerging from behind the Iron Curtain, the city has been catching up with the rest of Western Europe—contrasts abound. Just a five-minute walk from the historic Old Town might take you to stunning Art Nouveau buildings designed by Jewish architect Mikhail Eisenstein, or to crumbling wooden houses; to a modern architectural masterpiece, or to a stark Soviet-era bloc. Come and discover this hidden gem with us.

About Daniel

Daniel Gurevich was born in Vilnius in 1979 and made Aliyah to Israel in 1997 before returning to Lithuania, where he became an expert in the travel industry.

Today, he serves as the General Manager of his family-owned company, the travel agency Jerulita. His tours are conducted in Hebrew, English, Russian, and Lithuanian, and focus on Jewish heritage, religion, history, and culture in the Baltic States. The Holocaust and Jewish–local relations are subjects of particular interest to him and areas in which he conducts personal research. Architecture—especially Art Nouveau—is another of his specialties.

Daniel genuinely enjoys working with people, and every tour gives him new energy for the next one.
