About this talk
After exploring Istanbul, there are still two major cities in Turkey where we need to explore Jewish life.
The first is Izmir, also known as Smyrna, which stands out for its rich history and remarkable personalities, hosting an important cultural heritage where a vibrant Jewish life continues. Izmir once counted around 50 synagogues and midrashim at the turn of the 20th century, leaving behind a very rich legacy.
Our second city to explore is Ankara, the capital of Turkey, with a small Jewish presence and a beautiful synagogue. The Jewish community's existence in Ankara dates back to the 1st century BC. Architecture is one of the most important elements preserving the authentic texture of the Jewish neighborhood.
Let's discover the legacy, stories, structures, historical figures, and cultures of these two cities in Turkey together.
